...an open opportunity just north of Bristol
Jim Sharples Furniture are an established (10 years) bespoke furniture makers business and have taken on a brand new 2000sqft workshop. Last year they were unable to find suitable premises for their business to move to – there is a lack of small affordable spaces in the area - so they decided to set up a larger shared maker space workshop. North Corner Makers is a brand new woodwork shop north of Bristol, a quiet rural site about 25 mins from Bristol city centre. Workspace is available to rent to work alongside other highly skilled creatives, woodworkers, fine furniture makers, cabinet makers and designer makers.
The workshop is equipped with brand new Felder table saw, Felder planar thicknesser, Felder spindle moulder and a Felder bandsaw. These are all fully extracted with brand new extraction. A well organised clean and tidy space for makers to work.
Bench space is available for three full time makers but there is also space for some part time makers – who will pay a subscription fee and then be able to book bench space out when needed. They feel it offers something unique to woodworkers because all workshop users will all attend a site specific HSE standard machine training which will certify them to use the machines, making it a safe working environment.
North Corner Makers is a brand new woodwork. A place to work with other highly skilled creatives, woodworkers, fine furniture makers, cabinet makers, designer makers and crafters. As an established bespoke furniture makers Jim Sharples Furniture have taken on a brand new 2000sqft workshop. The workshop is equipped with brand new equipment, as detailed above.
This workshop space is an ongoing development and the makers who rent space here will be part of that progress. The plan is to continue improving the space for the makers. For example in the future they hope to have a ‘library’ of woodworking, design and craftsmanship books that makers and visitors can use. They plan to build a spray booth, hold open studio type events and run woodworking courses.
Workshop users will all attend a site specific machine training induction in order to use the machines safely.
North Corner Makers will help develop and advertise the makers within the space by holding regular exhibitions/open days and forming links with the local community. There is a strong vision for the future of the place they are keen to make it a centre for excellence for all things made from wood.
