Some great decorations Dennis. How did you find the bamboo for turning as I know the canes can split very easy. Also how heavy are they.

hi Derek

thank you for the compliments . the decorations are not that heavy. as for the bamboo I got a load of of cuts they were worktops and I agree they are hard to turn as they do splinter. the bamboo starts of as 50mm thick and is just the right size for the decorations.

Hi Dennis - These are very interesting pieces and food for thought as I think we are all going to be doing some of these over the next few weeks. I was talking to a few of the lads at the club about it and it has been suggested (although I haven't tried it yet ) that the lower finial could be made from the offcut of an acrylic pen blank to avid the cost of the former. Colwyn Way from Axminster is going to be visiting the club in November with some suggestions for decorations as well so there should be plenty of ideas floating around.

hi Julian

hope we do se more ideas for the decorations. these are turned using the pen mandrill and a 7mm tube. the kits are from the turners workshop. the only thing with them I had to modify my fitting kit as the finial at the bottom is prone to bending so I drilled a hole to take the finial and stop it bending.

hi Doug

thank you for the compliments. bamboo if ok to turn the only thing is it can be brittle for thin items and also it blunts your tools very quick.

the only thing I have changed with the decorations is after getting told of by my daughter that the string doesn't go so I have changed it for ribbon and actually she is right they do look better.

Good luck with the fairs

hi Ian and Simon

thank you for your comments .I have sold 12 out of the 23 made up till now and have a few more to make. I think the acrylic ones are going the best so will have to get more from the show at the end of the month.
