I like it too. Could the finial be ropala lacewood? It's a bit difficult to see the grain detail in the photo, but it has that sort of speckled appearance you get with lacewood.

Thank you both. I was worried about the proportions when I was turning it but once it was off the lathe and standing on its own base it looked fine(never seems the same when you are looking at a piece sideways)

Simon the finial is not lacewood it came off of the patio table I have been using for so many projects. And I still have lots left

I'm still intrigued by the finial. If it was once part of a patio table, it should be fairly weather-resistant, so could it be something like Fishtail Oak? There is a detailed discussion about woods with similar speckling on the hobbithouse website, which has pictures of more species of timer than you could shake a stick at (of any kind!!)

It's just gorgeous, love the shape and the orientation of the grains. The finial adds a great accent to it and makes a great contrast. Excellent work Derek!
