After giving a kindly old gent a hand clearing some junk out of his garage I happen to comment on a wood turning lathe that was sat in the corner, it's a sealey sm1308 I told him, To my surprise he told me To take it away because it did not work, well that's like a red rag to a bull to a chap like myself. After a full strip down I discovered the grub screw on the upper pulley had backed off and the pulley was fowling on the body making a terrible noise. It's all fixed now and running like a new one. Thank you lady luck!
