Hi Julie - welcome to the site. Unfortunately there are no pics for comments . If you've had a problem adding photos, check out the "how to's" on the home page.

Hi Julie - just me being stupid and not wearing my specs late at night - just take a look at the photo gallery, not the posting itself!!!

How long has your friend been turning? Both items look very nicely made and finished. As an experienced segmented turner, I'm sure Dennis Wake will also appreciate the bowl, as do I. Well done.

Look forward to seeing more as he progresses

Simon

hi julie, i must say the chess board in the bowl must have been very difficult, and it looks great, is that american walnut used for the pot pourri dish? it has a lovely finish.

Hi everyone..thanks for your kind and positive comments for the pieces that Ive posted so far..There are a few more to come. The person responsible for the work is not sure what type of wood he is using, as it was all kindly donated by the family of a wood turner..who had sadley passed away. But he thinksthe Chessboard effect could be walnut ..x

Well, for someone with little experience your friend is doing really well I think. Some of the wood looks like spalted beech (the ones with the irregular black lines and patterns), and possibly zebrano (which is quite light in weight) or lignum vitae (which is heavy and VERY hard) for the middle apple (BTW, you can get a very realistic stalk for fruit by using a clove). You might also have cherry in there too, and maybe walnut as Tony suggests. The goblet could be padauk, which often has the lighter colour sapwood and the darker heartwood together.

Whatever happens, tell your friend to keep it up - I can feel there's some really nice pieces just itching to be brought to life!

hi Julia
your friend has don really well in such a short time. i am very impressed with the segmented work. this is a speciality of mine and i like to see what others are doing as it always gives ideas to try my self. keep them coming. and if your friend has any questions to ask then post them on hear and they will definitely get a reply

hi Julie
firstly i must apologize for spelling your name wrong.
yes i have had a good look at the album and i like the look and shape of certain items but would refine the shape of others. the egg is really good and i like the popper bowl. as a turner you will find that he is never happy with the finished item as it can always be refined or changed to a better shape. the thing is that if he is making it for any one then as long as they are happy then you have done your job right.
