Hello Derek,  I''ve just come across your new carvers mallet which I like.
Looks like Ash and Mahogany, would you like to enlighten us and tell how you made it? Also have you used it yet and if so what on. I know,  curiosity killed the cat but you have to ask don,t you?   Alan T.

The mallet is 7" long of which 3" is the head and made of lignum vitaen for the head and chestnut for the handle.
It sits nicely in the hand and as of yet not used it in anger

That does look like a comfortable size and I bet the lignum vitae head gives it a good weight. Nicely made.

Now for the confession.

I am looking at the Axminster set anyone know what they are like or even the record set

If your only starting to carve, you need to think of what your going to carve. Large medium or small projects?

Record's set looks good for the money.
The set I have was a cheap set sold at Lidls and is being sold with different names at other stores......even on eBay.

This is the type of set bought for £17.....others average around £15-30.......>> eBay link << £30, just different coloured handles........The cheap set really do work well once sharpened correctly..........

More selection at eBay >> here <<

I've added to the set with a Henry Taylor super sharp set from a member here (so sorry, forgot who right now ) and some small 'V' chisels & a 3mm veining.

Look forward to seeing your set in action.
