My guess is ash but it has obviously dried out a lot so difficult to say without seeing the grain.

I think Al has got it right but dificult to tell, try turning it and then we will have a better view ?

The Bark looks simular to
 
English Oak
Elm
Elder
Walnut
 
The rings look much like The branch of an Elm
 
But I could be totally wrong

From the bark I would think it is ash, by the looks of the cracks it will split easy, if it  will I am sure it is ash.

Nowhere near! It is a shrub rather than a tree and it grows nearly all over the UK and futher afield. Not a wood many people think of when turning

Your guess at virus is wrong (thankfully) but, computer problems are existing  
 
Is it heavy?
if it is I'll go for Spruce.........
If its not, then its Popular..
