I am in the process of making a solid walnut fire surround for a living flame gas fire.
My usual preference for hardwood is probably an oil finish (eg Danish) with wax polish but wondered if anyone had any poissible comments or advice regarding a suitable finish.

Hi Delwyn and welcome to this site's forum.
I cant offer any comment on Walnut but, I did make a fire surround out of Pine some years back and stained it Mahogany and finished it off with Chestnut's woodwax22, Blended beeswax and hard wearing carnauba and it still looks pretty good.
I got mine from Axminsters >> here <<
I'm sure there will be more comments on this later.
PS; While you wait, why not fill in your profile and maybe someone who lives near by may know of a store close to you.

I think that using Danish Oil on Walnut may not bring out the full effect of the figuring in the wood. I would use a couple of coats of Shellac sanding sealer followed by three or four coats of good wax polish, preferrably bees wax.
