Bob,

Shellac is the most obvious choice to get the best finish available, brush on about three coats, then lightly rub down with the finest abrasive available to you, (fine wet and dry does well) then finish off with a cloth either as a traditional rubber, or if you can't manage that, just make a pad out of cloth and soak lighly in shellac, use a touch of linseed oil when the cloth starts to drag, do not lift off at any point but fly the cloth off the ends at all times, keep rubbing coats on until you have a very deep shine. Us ea proprietary shellac, button polish, or make your own with lac pearls and methylated spirit.

Hope this gives you the same finish that I acheive, nothing better.

               Bob,

Probably, button polish almost certainly, but, b&q is somewhere I don't use and specialist finishes

are not usually found in such places, decorators merchants will stock, relics.co.uk keep it and many

             more. D.
