Hi a pal has been clearing out his Dad's workshop, he was a woodworker/DIY chap and he came across the item below, asked me did I know what it was for -- no idea ! So wondering if the team has any input ??
It is about 20" long and the two timber parts are 2.5" square, it seems to be commercially made rather than home made. It may of course have nothing at all to do with woodwork but ????
Thanks in advance.

It looks to me like a book binding press. See one I found on ebay
Or just search for book binders images in your favourite search engine.

I have no idea of its intended use, but wonder if it would be useful when hand sharpening saws (not that I've done that!) You could clamp the blade between the blocks, and the channel might hold a guide, possibly.

Thanks for the replies and Mych it seems is correct, I posted it on the sister forum for Model engineering [very active forum] and several came back with the same answer so passed the info to my pal.
Thanks again for taking the time to reply.
