My wife has asked me to make some trays to give out as Christmas presents this year, she wants then dark stained so that she can use a white calligraphy pen to artistically decorate each one.
I started yesterday with a sample design. It's made of low grade ply from packing crates, which didn't allow easy mitreing of the corners, so I just butted them. I've got some pine that I'll use instead for the fences and handles, and will mitre those joints. I'm also going to use a thinner better quality ply that I have for the tray base, which I will try recessing into the bottom using my small router, or combination plane.
