Hi Richard
As many have said, we use different angles.  I used to have a little chart for the angles, i must see if i can find it again!!
My bowl gouges are all at 45 degrees, with an extra wee grind just below that at about 35 degrees.
Spindle roughing gouge at 45 degrees
All my spindle gouges are a long fingernail profile.

Thread: Small Lathe Recommendations...

I have a Record CL4, so i don`t need to change any fittings when i take my chuck into the club, to do demonstrations, you are right there is no difference between the 305 and the 305VS bar the variable speed, and of course there is the 5yr waranty
My first lathe was a Clarke bench top, it didn`t last that long, it was`nt big enough, then i had the yellow perform, but again that didn`t last long, i needed a bigger lathe.  If i had the money i would buy the 305 VS, as i find the variable speed a boon, i can`t be bothered to change belt speeds all the time.

Hi Ben
We have two of the DML305 VS`s (variable) in my local club, not the DML305, lovely little machines to use, easily moveable, ideal for the demonstrations etc.  They even have ability for indexing.

Hi Dennis
The edge are always the worst, you just hope you don`t lose any of the natural edge when turning it.
I have just taken delivery of some Birch Burrs, which are difficult to get a hold of and I have turned two of them of them, will post photos pretty soon
