Can any members give me some advice?I moved into a new home recently where all the flooring upstairs is 8mm thick pine floorboards. Well, I think it is. Its definitely not that engineered stuff

I have attached two pictures to give some idea. One shows the overall light barley coloured pine but there are large areas that are worn down to the bare wood by general wear and tear. I would like to coat or varnish the boards but do not wish to create much dust by sanding them down. Firstly, could I get away with just sanding lightly the worn areas rather than the whole floor? and secondly and most importantly the reason for this posting, is what should I coat them with? I haven’t a clue what the previous owner put on them but the sloppy bits at the edges would indicate a wood darkener that has left a gloss finish. Can anybody offer some advice?
