Thread: Shabby chic vase

This was made from scrap pieces as a chopping board included strips together then cut them into strips across turned them end grain up didn't like so glued the strips together into a square put it on the lathe turned it round then cut it into more pieces twisted them round a bit glued them back hollowing as it grew it did fail twice on the clue so had to more or less start again but got there in the end

Hi Derek live never thought of it I've made several for presents

They do look a nice present and I enjoyed making them I got 13 out of the wood which was literally scrap

So will have to make another can't leave it at an unlucky number

Thankyou for your comments

Thread: Segmented work
13/04/2018 12:14:45

Hi Derek cheers for that

The flower vase took a while to make my mind up how I was to make it

The next one I am going to try a different method i.e. steaming the blank and pressing it

The disadvantage with that is all the work is wasted if it fails so I suppose I will have to have a practise run

But it will be a while I've got other things to do first

12/04/2018 20:14:59

I have enjoyed making these two projects The flower bowl wasn't of a pain and by no way turn out perfect so I will be making another and hopefully improve

Mind you the forewoman loves it

The feature ring vase took a while to do but was enjoyable

Thread: Burr bowl and economy bowl
26/02/2018 17:03:32

hi derek

the economy bowl was my first that is why I made a silly error I should have binned the last piece and added a

bigger piece it will be right on the next one

with the burr I have left the chucking foot on because I could not make my mind up as to whether l was happy with a the finish I'm not its going back in the lathe and I will probably still leave the chucking point on I like it

but your comments are as always fully appreciated

23/02/2018 17:39:11

The burr is 320mm x ummm it's a lovely piece of wood hope I've done it justice

The economy bowl is walnut and lime when I made it I should have binned the htm section and 'replaced it with a solid one

Hi jason

The best advice I can give you is to join a woodturning club there will be one near you somewere

Thread: Best way to transfer plans onto wood
05/02/2018 09:01:43

Hi jason l mean B and Q of course

04/02/2018 19:35:43

Hi Jason

If you have a B@A near you they sell good quality birch ply it is about £60 a sheet

They normally have a cutting shop where you can get it cut into two 4ftx4ft squares

You should then be able to get them in a car mine at the time was a Toyota yaris

Do not be tempted to cut them smaller

I live in teesside if you are near me I have a set of wooden template I've made that I will lend you

30/01/2018 18:45:40

Hi Jason

If you look into my albums you will see the plywood horses I've made I believe I am into double figures

Do not be tempted to buy cheap ply go for 18mm thick birch ply you will need one full sheet 8ft by 4ft

And set it out as it is shown on the drawing if it is the rocking horse shop one

Enjoy yourself and good luck any problems get in touch
