Really like them both Derek, the Eucalyptus just swings it for me, beautifully turned.

Have you plenty of work in the pipeline?

Thread: Pen for me
05/04/2011 09:06:30
Hows your pen going Bill?

My preference would be dark at the nimb, with the grain running all the way up the pen, but each to their own.

Cheers.

Very nice Derek,

I can`t make my kind up if i prefer it just as a bowl or with the lid, either way a striking piece.

Cheers.

Thread: commemorative piece work in progress

Looking good Tony,

I`ve used Chestnut`s Hard wax oil recently, >>here<< , It`s hard wearing, easy to apply & a wipe over with wire wool when dry, will give a satin finish.

Cheers,

>>Here`s<< a direct link to the site Dave mentioned.

Dave,

Could you give a brief description of the weekend, for instance, do you get a full 3 days? I see the price for non members is £225, but for 3 days that`s £75 a day which for all the talent () on show isn`t a bad price.

I would be interested, luckily i`m fairly close to loughborough, but it would be nice to get some first hand knowledge of the event before i splash the cash .

Cheers.

Thread: Axminster - North West

I can understand your principals Bill, it seemed a shame to me that they didn`t bother with what must be one of the best attended shows.

That said, possibly the logistics & cost were too much for them to consider Harrogate, perhaps with this new store being considerably closer to Harrogate than any other of their stores, they may consider standing this year, i hope so.

Cheers.

Looking good Tony,

What sort of time scale does a piece like this take to make?

Also what timber are you using?

Like the others, i`m looking forward to seeing your progress.

Cheers.

Thread: Goblets

Good efforts Paul.

I would suggest a bead or cove under the cup & by the foot would give the stem more interest & balance.

Just my tuppence worth.

Cheers.

Thread: Ebonised & gilded Ash bowl
18/03/2011 23:04:52
Thanks again chaps.

The second piece i made a few of around November time as Christmas presents.

This was my favourite,

It was smaller than the previous one, again lacquered but this time a little more understated, which always appeals to me.

Cheers.

Bill,

You don`t have a profile so i don`t know where in the country you are, but Ashley Iles are near Boston.

You can actually visit their workshop, indeed i did just that with my local turning club >photo`s< of which are here, apologies for the poor quality.

I`ve always found then very friendly, they stand at a lot of the shows & have always been happy for me to pick up tools from their workshop.

Cheers.

Thread: Ebonised & gilded Ash bowl
18/03/2011 19:14:36
Thanks Bill,

I`d not said in my post what timber it is, in fact it`s Chestnut burr, a load of which i was given when 2 trees came down in a storm getting on for 3 years ago.

Cheers.

Thanks for the comments chaps.

I like the spray Ralph, i`ve used a few of the Chestnut aerosol products recently & have found them easy to use.

I used their aerosol gloss acrylic lacquer on this piece & was very happy with the resulting finish.

As for the gild, the silver is by liberon & may be called a paste, it`s just me calling it a wax .

Thanks again for the comments.

Carrying on with my colouring experiments, this is an Ash bowl, 9", ebonised with Chestnut spray, then the grain filled with silver gild wax.

As usual a few in progress photos are on my blog >>here<<

Cheers.

Look excellent Alan.

Did you make them on the router table? or are the spindle lessons paying off already

Did you glue up the center panels or are they pre-made laminated boards?

Cheers.
