Thread: yew bowl
11/03/2015 08:58:25

hi Steve no I haven't unfortunately I always forget to take them photos.

16"x2 1/2 " yew bowl turned from the last of my timber from the antique shop. it was a bit dry so took some time to turn and sand to a finish. the finish I have put on it is a food friendly oil ( butchers block oil).

thank you Derek. it was a challenge as always with thin and wide turning. the other thing was it was really dry so splintered easily. I have another this size and am thinking of making a wall plaque out of it what do you think. I think it is a burr but not a mela burr.

hi Derek thank you for the compliment. it is a very easy timber to use it is like the cherry very silky and smooth timber. it doesn't like a lot of heat so sand as slow as you can get it. I power sand most of my items now but have the speed right the way down.

in November I got a hollowing tool from crown and only just got the chance to use it to the good. so after getting a blank of beech so got on and turned this. the only thing I would of done different would of been to thin the wall down.

the other day I was lucky to get a few blanks and one of them was a maley bur 16x1" so had to turn a thin platter. this was harder than I thought as with it being thin I had to fix a chuckling point with hot melt glue. her is a few photos of the finished platter. all comments welcome.
