An example of one of Mark Doolittle’s incredible pieces

What happens when biology meets art? Well, some amazing pieces of sculptural woodcarving get produced by fine woodwork artist Mark Doolittle, that’s what! We were lucky enough to speak to this amazingly talented maker to find out how he celebrates biology through the medium of wood, and how his pieces serve to express the dynamic form of growth and symmetry encountered in cells and tissues, as well as in whole organisms throughout the natural world. His work truly has to be seen to be believed.

Edward Hopkins’ tubular bells build is discussed in this month’s issue

If you’re a fan of Edward Hopkins’ ‘Home Truths’ series, then this next instalment will not disappoint. This month he discusses, in minute detail with a fair share of humour thrown in, just how he went about producing his own set of tubular bells. Of course, the journey was not without its ups and downs, but the end result was a success.

Michael Huntley’s potting shed is a great example of a free-standing build

Carrying on with his new series on small structures, this month Michael Huntley delves into the topic of free-standing structures, using his potting shed as an example, which was built from scrap and recycled timber. He also gives examples of other buildable sheds, which should hopefully provide you with some inspiration!

Carl Jacobson’s folding cedar lawn chair is a great project for summer

It’s time to sit back and relax - well, maybe once you’ve made your own version of this chair! Carl Jacobson takes you through the steps for making this project, which is perfect for the summer months ahead (fingers crossed!)

He lifts the lid on some of the top machinery and tools due to be hitting the shelves later this year. Don’t worry, he also found the time to test all the latest kit too and was a particular fan of DeWalt’s nailgun range.
