A wooden paddle-making course at The Woodspace UK - a new venture in Exeter, founded by Martin Lammers, a  professional joiner and traditional boat builder - is proving attractive to people who are enjoying mastering the complex but learnable craft of making an efficient and beautiful-looking wooden paddle.

Martin says: ‘Paddle-making can be a great way of self-expression with many different shapes and styles available to suit any waterman.  A paddle that you have crafted to suit your chosen pursuit, paddling style and size, is something to keep, treasure and enjoy for the rest of your life.’

The Woodspace UK is a social enterprise providing flexible and affordable access to professional workshop space and equipment to support small businesses, freelance and hobby wood workers.

As Martin adds: ‘We aim to be the best woodworking space in the south-west of England, by providing safe and efficient brand-new machinery in a well organised clean, tidy and bright space. We welcome all woodworkers, fine furniture makers, cabinet makers, designers and crafters to our spacious, comfortable, warehouse in Marsh Barton, Exeter. There is also a fully equipped kitchen enabling woodworkers using the facilities to make hot drinks and light meals.’

The paddle-making course is a regular two-day event at The Woodspace UK. Course members create and shape a paddle customised to their needs. This is great for a woodworker at any level from the novice to the advanced.’

Other popular courses at The Woodspace UK include

  • Chopping Board: A day-long course which is a great way to learn some basic hand and machining skills and at the end of the day take home something beautiful and useful that you have created.
  • Tool Basics: A two-day course which is great for the complete beginner to a competent woodworker. We cover the sharpening, set up and use of a range of hand tools as well as marking equipment

Martin’s love of woodworking started in his teens. Having spent much of his life sailing and working on classic yachts across the world, carpentry has always been all around him.  After studying Naval Architecture in Southampton and then traditional boat building in Lyme Regis, Martin went on to work across the south-west on a wide range of projects. This included creating one-off art pieces, working as a joiner on large luxury yachts and restoring traditional boats in a range of sizes.
