The course, titled ‘Hand Tools Demystified with Deneb Puchalski’, will cover the following areas:

  • Proper blade sharpening and hand tool set up to make your woodworking tasks easier and more enjoyable. Deneb will go over some methods that take all the guesswork out of these two essential steps.
  • You will learn how to construct your own angle setting jig, hone a micro bevel on your blade and minimise rust.
  • Deneb will cover planing techniques, for getting a board ‘four square’, showing the best way to flatten and dimension a board by hand and the sequence of tools that make this efficient.
  • The importance of angle of cut in relation to the material being worked.
  • Chisel preparation and use.

This is a hands-on course and by the end of the day, those attending will have an understanding of what a truly sharp edge is and how a tool should feel in the hand. Mastering a craft takes repetition and this class will provide the skills needed to make tools perform at their best.

Deneb is the lead demonstrator for Lie-Nielsen Hand Tool Events® and has travelled across North America and the UK teaching people about Lie-Nielsen tools. Deneb studied woodworking at the ‘Center for Furniture Craftsmanship’ in Rockport, Maine. He then went on to become an assistant instructor and artist-in residence at that school, during which time he honed his woodworking skills and sense of design. In addition to contributing articles to various woodworking magazines, Deneb is the leading talent for Lie-Nielsen’s YouTube instructional videos about hand tools and woodworking. His passion and enthusiasm for the tools he works with are clear to all who have seen him in action.

The course venue is situated in the beautiful and dramatic countryside of the Lake District. There is a café on the premises and plenty of hotels nearby. To attend this course in the USA would normally cost the equivalent of £150.
