The Furniture Industry Sustainability Programme (FISP) has welcomed its first non-EU based manufacturer, Turkish furniture making firm Yonga Mobilya. Yonga was founded in 1974 by Turkish workers in Germany, and today employs 230 people. It is an exclusive supplier to Marks & Spencer, and as well as being the FISP’s first non-EU member, is also the first from Marks & Spencer’s supply chain. It is committed to the retailer’s ‘Plan A’ scheme to reduce the environmental impact of goods and services, and becoming the world’s most sustainable major retailer by 2015.

FISP was founded in 2006 by the furniture industry body FIRA. Its purpose is to recognise businesses that are working in a sustainable fashion. Members are involved in encouraging other businesses to adopt environmentally friendly practises. Yonga had to undergo a rigorous audit by FIRA, which they passed “with flying colours”. FIRA stated that it was “pleased to be working with Marks and Spencer’s supply base”.

You can see Yonga’s work at its site, and FIRA’s website has more on FISP.
