My dad is clearing out his workshop so i can move into it! He has a 500 sq/ft workshop with pretty much every hand and power tool you can imagine! There is also A lot of good quality hard and soft wood for sale.

We need to clear pretty much all of it, he has been collecting tools for near on 30 years for his work, there is so much its near on impossible to list it all, he has all manner of tools.

I was wondering if anybody could advise as to the best way to sell it all? Would anybodybe interested in coming to take a look? as there are also industrial machines, such as banch saw, laeth thicknesser, drill press etc.

     Thanks for any help

    Ryan,

where are you? If this was within a few miles of me I would be around tonight!

The next thing would be to take a few photos and post them on here.....plenty of people to advise how to do that ......and I reckon you will soon sell the stuff if you have realistic prices.

One key question........are the machines single phase or 3 phase? Your dad will know the answer.

You could ebay it but it's a whole bunch of work to list an entire workshopfull of kit.

You can do batches to reduce the effort required to list them, but I would only do this for reatively low value items and try to make batches of things that will be useful together.  A set of chisels with a sharpening stone and a marking knife perhaps, or a set of spanners and screwdrivers with a toolbox.

    Cheers,

    Ryan,

Good woodworking, have a list on file of agents around the country that purchase second hand tools and would probably visit to give you an esimate,

If you ask Ben, I'm sure he will be able to get it for you from his associates. This list was compiled by the editor of 2 years ago, Nick Gibbs, who is now editor and owner of British Woodworking, you could go direct to him for this if you liked, a mention as to whom gave you this lead would help I,m sure, email address, nickgibbs@britishwoodworking.com.

Thanks very much for your help,

Mike, im located in romford essex, I just phoned my dad at work, the machines are all single phase, and im going in his workshop now to take a few pics.

Mathew, i have looked at ebaying the items but as you say its pretty hard as he litterally has 1000's of tools. but thanks for the reply.

Derek, Thanks for your response, i will send nick an email, it seems like a pretty good route to go down if i exhaust all other routes.

Also my Dad (John) says if anybody has any questions they can give him a call on 07872636200.

     Thanks again

Wood! Yes, wood! Interested I am........

Especially if there's anything that'll turn nicely! and romford's not that far away from Milton Keynes.

A list might be a good starting point and then if anyone's interested they can phone your dad and thrash out a deal.

I have to sit my dad down tonight and well crack on with a list. It will be a bit of a monster, hes got loads of wood, oak, cherry, mahogany etc..

    Ryan.

A list & some photo`s on the site is the way to go, I`ve had experience of people Derek refer to & as you say it is the last resort, please believe me.

I think reasonable people will give a you a decent offer for anything you have that is worth while selling.

    Good luck.

Ryan, I agree with Baz in that you won't get a lot of cash from traders, they have to make a living, but, I gave that list to someone locally and they took the same attitude, this was last summer, to date they have not disposed of a single item privately, it is better to get a little less and to dispose of it all, than to have the phone ringing time and time again very single night in the hope that maybe something will sel, and this can go on for years. When I've upgraded my plant, I have advertsed the stuff and felt that I needed a telephone answering assistant.

Ryan. It all depends on how much it's all worth, I would definately use eBay for big items you get the biggest buyer group that way.  You should achieve maximun value. I wouldn't use a trader as already stated they buy cheap sell expensive and will probably put it on eBay anyway. Just depends on how much hassle you want but you should be able to list 20 - 30 items in an evening but you will need an accurate discription and good photo's, so sit your Dad down and get the correct discriptions and condition of the machines sorted and Bob's your uncle. Let buyers collect don't get into couriers or pallets.

    No reply from Mike yet...?

I bet he was out the front door as soon as he read Ryan's reply, that's why!!

    Show/hide user stats

You reckon he's banging on the door already with a fistful of money, I mentioned an aquaintance  fairly local to me, I could have the pick of the shop including a combination, but where do i put it? life's a pig, stuff I want and no room at the inn, But there again do I really want it? I've managed very well up to now so!!!

    Thanks again everyone,

I think the ebay route may be the best. I was a power seller and have 700ish feedback, so im not too bad on there, its just really hard when i dont quite know what im selling and there is SO much to sell.

For the bigger things they would have to deffo come and pick stuff up He has a cast iron saw in the middle that must way a ton easily,

As i need to clear the workshop so i can move in there (A crime to you guys i suppose) The trader option may not be a terrible route for a quick turn around.

I will get a list drawn up with my dad then put everything on here inc pictures etc, that way i can start puting things on ebay aswell, My dad is pretty reluctant to sell things i think but there is so much in there and he doesnt use it anymore. I think when he sees the money coming in he'll soon give in to the idea!

    Ryan,

You're gonna have some real fun with this i can see!! In a way I envy you, it has to be one of the most interesting things to do to trawl through someone else workshop stock. good luck.
