    And don't they feel a lot nicer! It's usually one of the first things I do to a "new" plane, but isn't that black stain a pain? Why on earth did they  feel it necessary

    Did you sand before the coats?

    You need to get some Restore for the metal, then it will look like new.

    Hi Roger, yes, I totally agree, they feel so much nicer to hold now. There's none of that 'pasticcy' feel anymore and the plane itself looks so much nicer for it.

    Hi Sparky, I gave a very lght sanding with 400g after stripping the old finish but it wasn't really necessary, the Rustins' Strypit stuff removes everything once you work out how to use it. Yes, I am now keen to have a go with some Restore at some point after seeing your results.
