    Hi All

I've been getting quotes for kitchen worktops over the wknd for the misses. She wants solid oak or rustic beach or suchlike and for 2 pieces 1X (3m x 76cm x 4cm) and 1X (4x x 62cm x 4cm) is coming to around £800 and thats square edged, unfitted (as I'm doing that bit to save some money)

My questions is, for that sort of money, could I not buy some oak boards, dimentions them and glue them up the same as I did with my dining table top (did I put that in my gallery? I'll check).

Even if it means buying a planer thicknesser and biscuit jointer, could I not get it all in for this cost? AND use wider staves instead of the 40mm ones they all seem to come with. I've not bought hardwood from a proper hardwood supplier before so wanted to judge some options first.

I have to bear in mind that the £800 did include the tops coming with 3 coats of oil already on.

On another note, I have just seen that  Neil has some Iroko worktops on here!! Much thinner thn we were after, but what a cool look with our new white cabinets and slate floor!

    Cheers

2" sawn oak is around £45 a cubic foot, I`ll let you do the calculations.

Hopefully my calculations are correct, presuming the worktops are 30" deep and 2" thick and I use 3" wide boards, the total length of worktop is 275" therefore I will require 10 boards at 3" wide to make a 30" top so....

    275" * 10 = 2750"

    multiply by the width of * 3" = 8250"

multiply by the  thickness of the boards * 2" = 16500

divided by 1728 (I saw this in another post on getwoodworking) =  9.6 cubic foot oak.

At Baz's suggested price of £45 a cubic foot I make that about £432.

Its an over estimation as one of the worktops is actually  25" wide not 30.

Would someone be so kind as to check my calculations please, as this is the first time I've attempted this.

    Kind regards

    Paul
