    Well Mike,

Where you have that 'stuff' propped against the wall, is where I keep my Triton, (at the moment covered with material for my new bench.) Otherwise, the orientation is the same as mine.

You must have more width than me, because I couldn't find anywhere to stand, to take a pic from this angle! I have an up and over door, which means I have to place my bandsaw where yours is, realtively speaking!

Not much room to swing a plank though!

You turn out some nice work; some very nice work!

    Regards

    John

    Cheers John,

just as an experiment I have added a drawing of my workshop layout:

    /members/images/2075/Gallery/Workshop_plan_copy.jpg

As I have said previously, floorspace is my priority, so apart from a lathe next to my pillar drill, there will be no more machinery. I could easily occupy a shed double the size! As you can see from the drawing, the width is just under 3.8m internally.

Thanks you again for your generous comments.

    Mike

    Hi Mike,

    Nice!

I have to work in a single garage; not even room for a mini!

    (17' x 9' Approx..)

I wonder at times how I got the machinery in, but I did!

    How about some pictures, John?

My first shed was about 10'x6' I guess......later extended by about 6' in length. Lots of hatches to make everything work! You can do a lot in that sort of space, and you do learn to prioritise. One key thing is not to store materials in the shed if you can help it.

Thanks for the diagram Mike. It's funny, because your workshop looks an awful lot bigger in your photo's... In comparison, my single car garage is 5.4m x 3m between the walls, which isn't really that much smaller - if I could "lose" some of my mum's junk, I could probably go for a similar setup to what you have!

If you have a roofspace with sufficient ceiling joists, that's ideally where you should store your timber - I need to do some work on mine... One day! Most of my stock ends up stacked in my bedroom, particularly during the winter when it's too cold and damp out there.

I have the stock-storage problem. It is all laying across my planer right now, so I have a major hour of labour, putting it outside on trestles, before I even start work in the shop.

That is one reason I must buy a shed. I need this timber out of the way!

When that's done, pics will follow! Along with some projects maybe..

    Regards

If you need the wood away from your workshop, just ask and It will be a pleasure to nick it from you

I found some smileys, but I can't get rid of the URL that shows up... So I won't use them yet! Lol!

For anyone else interested in setting out a small workshop (single-car garage size), here is the Smart Shop layout from Fine Woodworking.com. Not a million miles away from Mike's setup either.

    Thanks for that Olly..

Yes I see that it is much like my set up.

What is different and overlooked,  is that the averag American car is bigger than its British counterpart. So a  'single garage' there is bigger than it is here! Mine is 17' x 9' approx. Tiny! I am not exagerating when I say I couldn't get a Mini into my garage when it was empty.

The garge is integral with the house and once a car  is inside, you can't open the car-door to get out, because of the  butress where the garage walls breach the house wall. So I ended up having to push the car in that last few feet. No poblem 30 years ago. Near impossible now! So I converted it to a woodshop.

My planer is bigger than the one shown in the pdf sketch and whilst I could have it nearer the door, my neighbours wouldn't be happy with the noise, as feeding the beast would mean I have to keep the garage door up!

If I could do a 'sketch-up' I would show you my layout, but until I can take a pic, of the actual lay-out, I'm stumped. I've saved that article btw, as I about to make a new bench and I'm thinking of a move round!

    Thanks again...

    Regards

    John

PS Just measured my garage. The width is 8 feet seven inches. Oh, and the one corner is taken up by the underneath of the stairs in the house!
