Hello, I need one of these for occasional use inc site work, pref 12" +. I am interested in robust build, accurate depth of cut setting and reasonable extraction performance. Can anyone out there give me any information, positive or negative, about any make or model in this category so that I can narrow down the search ? (you will be richly rewarded - with on-line praise!)

    William.

Hi & welcome to the forum.

I have the DeWalt portable thicknesser, i`ve had it about 5 years & cannot fault it. Its extraction is excellent, it is very sturdy & although in the higher price bracket of thicknessers, in my opinion worth every penny.

I have used cheaper versions but they don`t come close to the quality of the DeWalt, as with most things quality costs.

    Good luck with your search.

    Baz.

PS fill in your profile, its nice to know a little about fellow members.

I've also heard very good things about the Makita and Elektra Beckum (Metabo) models as well.

6 Counties have a (only just) used DW733 here for offers around £300.

Personally I have a Jet JWP12 which has very similar features at around £200 mark and I have been very pleased with it. If I'm nutpicking then the extraction port could do with being a full 4", as it is on the DeWalt, but apart from that the Jet is a nice machine.

    Cheers,

    Matthew

I have to agree that the two already mentioned are the dogs danglies, De Walt and the Makita. I have used a cheaper version of this type of thicknesser and it was pants but these machines are without doubt the best available in the bench top models.
