Got a few nice pieces of yew here now, a couple have been in by shed for a few years and have got a bit wet,, I'll give them a few days to dry out before cutting the blanks.

As Sparky keeps gluing things together, would any of the approx. 150mm. by 150mm. x 20mm. pieces of Oak I have as offcuts be any good to do the same? If they are I will save them rather than put them in the firewood bag.

I'm just starting to play around with laminating wood together before turning so I'd say yes, and depending on how many pieces of Oak you have you could do quite a few interesting things with them, of course I'm speaking as a turner here!

One thing I've been playing with recently is laminating wood with perspex before turning and I've got a couple of reasonable results, one in particular I'm really happy with is a lamination of wood and clear perspex which when turned and polished allows you to see the grain 'within' the finished object. I'll upload it to the gallery here later this week to let you have a look.

    Hi Derek

A short time ago you had a thread about Yew blanks you were amassing which we could pick up from you.  I can't find the thread and I can't get the search facility to work to find the thread.  I'm in Bristol next week until Wednesday and thought it might be an opportunity to call on the way home.

Any news and what was the thread called?

    Cheers Dave

    Dave,

why don't you message Derek directly? That way he will get an email and will certainly respond.

Good idea Mike - why didn't I think of that?

As I have just told Dave, my internet connection was down all day yesterday, but all o/k now.

    I have, 13 pieces of old timber sixed about 180mm x from 60, 80, and 100mm. thick.

    New timber, 8 pieces, 200 x 70 to 100mm. thick.

    New timber, 11 pieces 150x 100 or 80mm. thick.

Although I said I would give it away, I have incurred some expense and would like to collect that, so a contribution of say £1:50 per piece would be a big help.

    Derek.

Thanks Dennis - great tip and it worked fine.

Why doesn't the search function work?  I typed in "blanks" in "titles" and it couldn't find any.  I guess the search function needs fixing, or am I missing something.

Anyway thanks for your help _ I'm hoping to see Derek next week.

    Cheers Dave

    Derek,

You might find that your diagonally sawn boards are more prone to cracking as you have exposed endgrain in the cut face. A layer of shellac or sanding sealer on both sides (but not the bark) before you dry them may help limit this problem.

    Cheers,

    Matthew
