Hi mick, I had a go at honing the chisel on my oil stone but that was it. It did not go anywhere near a grinding wheel in my workshop.

I found it hard to get used to the size but it certainly is a well made tool.

    Hi All

What a great tool!! As everyone has mentioned, this is a very well made tool. Well balanced, it takes and holds an edge superbly.

I imagine a handful of the smaller size ones would be perfect for the fine box making I am getting into, especially for cleaning up very small dovetails.

I'll upload a photo I have for size comparison.

I am seriously impressed with this tool!!

It is so important to get your hands on a tool before making a purcashing decision isnt it! Thanks again to Matthew for organising this pass around.

This would make a superb accompanyment to a good set of standard size bevel edged chisels and British made too!

    Who wants it now???

    Hi,

If that's everyone on the list, please pop it back to me at WH.

Any requests for the next passaround?

    Gyokucho Saw?

    Richard Kell Honing Guide?

    Japanese Chisel?

Clifton No.3? (postage would be about £10 a time)

    Matthew,

firstly many thanks for this first pass around......a great idea, and a lovely tool. I hope you sell one or two on the back of this idea.

My preference would be for one of the small saws next, but I'm not really fussed. I wouldn't be too interested in a plane on the grounds of being happy with what I've got.......in contrast to my hand-saw situation.

    Cheers

    Mike

Got your message Baz, I'll post it to you on monday

Thanks again Matthew.  Another item on the christmas list!

I've heard that AI offer alternative handles on their chisels? Is this still the case? You offer the babinga handle ones. Is that because you think they are the best? Or do they not offer alternatives anymore? Any native wood handles on offer?

They do european beech handles to fit the dovetail and bevel edge but not the  butt chisels, which is why we do bubinga as standard. The registered firmer chisels come with Ash handles, which I believe is of UK origin.

    Cheers,

    Matthew

Hi Baz, Sorry I couldnt make it to the post office yesterday, but I posted it to you today.

Thanks Matthew, I just like the idea of a chisel that is made in the UK with native materiels. Although I highly suspect the brass ferrel and even tool steel doesnt come from the UK these days! Still Such a nice tool.

    Hope you enjoy Baz.

Hi Baz, has that chisel turned up yet? Posted it on tuesday second class recorded.

Picked the chisel up today, it sure does fit snugly in the hand.

    First impressions are very good.

I will give it a sharpen tomorrow, have a play & report back.

    Mathew,

lovely chisel, i sharpened it up & had a mirror finish in minutes.

I`ve been cutting stub tenons on the table saw & cleaning them up with the chisel, & its been a delight to use. Being so small does make it very easy to control. I`m not sure i`d want a 2" blade with such a small handle, but any under the 1" size would be a pleasure to use, the 6 piece set is definitely on my wish list.

Thanks for doing the pass around, i admit to being sceptical at first but am glad i finally took the opportunity to use the chisel.

I already use the Japanese pull saws But look forward to further pass arounds.

    Thanks again  Baz.

    Hi,

    Thanks everyone for your feedback.

Baz, the 1-1/4", 1-1/2", 2" and corner chisel all have larger handles (about twice the size), so they still feel balanced. As you say, the small one on anything bigger than an inch would feel really odd.

Following the success of this passaround we have just started another one with a Gyokucho Japanese saw and will be doing more of them in future. Thanks again to all who have taken part.

    All the best,

    Matthew

If you`re trying to tempt me Mathew, it`s definitely working

That looks a tremendous set, what with them & the Dragon bandsaw blades, i may just have to work a few extra hours!!

    Baz.
