Just got the May issue, Gordon Warr tests the sip 01497 planer thicknesser which is a copy of the Woodstar (sheppac) machine that I have, a very good report, that I must agree with in all respects.

Ben You are doing a great job with the mag. it's getting better each month, keep it up mate under the last control it was getting a bit in the doldrums.

    derek.

Thanks Derek, we're working hard to breath new life into WW. It's the oldest running UK woodwork mag (1901) currently on the market, and with a bit of TLC I think we can make it great again!

Oh, got all your docs thanks. I'm not actually ready yet for finishing. I am currently still building the cabinet but wanted to try and learn as much as i can about different types of finishing so when the time comes i'm ready.

Another quick question as you seem a knowledgable chap, i'm looking to buy a good quality sander but i'm not sure what is the best type to start off with? Been looking at the dewalt orbit 1/2 sheet sander or the dewalt belt sander?  i cans ee advantages of both but wondered if you could help? Thought the belt sander would be handy as i have no room for bench mounted sanding and it could be used in this manner upside down.? But i could get a better finish with a random orbit sander?

    Thanks again

    Tony

Hi Tony, there's quite a long thread on this question buried in the forum. Here's a link, hope you find it useful:

    Orbit or belt sander?

    Tony,

read as Ben says, belt by all means, can remove a lot in a short time, but random orbital for finishing, plus you will need to rub down by hand, for best results after.

    Derek.
